What is a Web Browser?
An Internet Browser interprets HTML, the programming language of the Internet, into the words and graphics that you see when viewing a web page.

The most common browser is Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which controls approximately 80% of the market. Netscape's Navigator is a distant second.

What is HTML?
Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) is the programming language that internet browsers use to display a web page. Each element (commonly known as "tags") contains an instruction, commanding the browser how to display images and words.

HTML is standardized by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3c) and is followed by most of the leading browsers. The industry leaders, Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer use HTML, but do not include support for all of the same tags. Thus a page viewed in IE can look vastly different from a page viewed in Netscape.

What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is a way of distinguishing you and your company from the rest of the people and companies on the Internet. You would normally type in the domain name of the company you wish to find out about into the address bar of your Internet web browser. For example to get here you probably typed in www.redeyedevelopment.com. 'redeyedevelopment.com' is our domain name. The 'www' means you are looking on the 'World Wide Web'. The "com" part of the domain name reflects the purpose of the organization or entity (in this example, "commercial") and is called the top-level domain name. Collectively, the three sections are referred to as a 'URL'. Red Eye Development will assist you on deciding on a domain name and obtain that domain name as part of the purchase of your website.

Red Eye Development can obtain a domain name for you as included as part of our services.

What is a Content Management Solution?
A content management system (CMS) is a system used to manage the content of a Web site. The CMS allows the content manager or author, who may not know HTML, to manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from a Web site without needing the expertise of a Webmaster.

Red Eye Development specializes in the creation of Content Management Systems for websites.

What is Active Server Pages (ASP)?
Active Server Pages is a specification that generates dynamically created Web Pages. These server side dynamic pages allow user interaction and database connectivity, providing for a wealth of Web Application functionality.

When a Web browser requests an ASP page, the Web server generates a page with HTML code and sends it back to the browser.

ASP along with Javascript and HTML is Red Eye Development's main web development language.

What is Javascript?
JavaScript is a scripting language from Netscape that is only marginally related to the Java programming language. JavaScript is embedded as a small program in a web page, that is interpreted and executed by the visitor’s browser. These small programs are often executed by mouse functions, buttons, or other actions from the user.

Red Eye Development uses JavaScript extensively during website development and design.

What is Flash?
Flash is used to develop interactive animated graphics for Web sites as well as for desktop presentations and games. Many Websites contain Flash movies as an introduction to the main site content, while other sites use Flash technology for their entire content.

Flash movies on the Web are viewable by what's called a plug-in. This plug-in, also known as a Flash Player is downloaded without charge from the Macromedia Flash Website, making Flash available to all Web users. Both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator utilize a specific plug-in made for that particular browser, allowing Flash animations to look the same on any platform.

Red Eye Development Web can custom program a Flash movie for your Website, adding a professional look and the advanced technology of moving graphics to your company's image.

What is a Dynamic Website?
Pages in a dynamic-content Web site are constructed "on the fly" when a page is requested from a web browser. Dynamic-content web site, while developed by Red Eye Development, are maintained directly by you. These web sites generally cost more initially to develop, but then you don't have to pay every time you need to change something on your site. If you plan to make frequent changes to your site, you most likely will be better off with a dynamic Web site.

What is a Static Website?
For a static-content Web site, all content appearing on Web pages is placed manually while the site is being developed. Static-content Web sites are developed and then maintained by Red Eye Development. These Web sites generally cost less when initially developed, but then all future changes still have to be done by Red Eye Development or other web professionals of your choice. Therefore a static web site can be more expensive to maintain, especially when you want to make frequent changes to your site.

What is Hosting / Website Hosting?
Web hosting refers to the process of publishing a web site so that it is available to the world on the Web. Paid web hosting also involves getting a domain name and not having forced ads displayed on your site.

Red Eye Development will set up the hosting of your site as part of our services.

What is a URL?
A Uniform Resource Locator is the address of a file which is accessible on the Internet. Most often, this file is an HTML page, however it can also be an image, Java applet, or simply a text file. A URL usually contains the protocol required to access the file, followed by the domain name that identifies the Web page on the Internet.

For example, the URL of Red Eye Development's Website is 'http://www.redeyedevelopment.com'.

What is SSL?
The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a protocol for managing the security of a message transmission on the Internet. It is most commonly used for encrypting data when receiving or transmitting sensitive data between your website and a visitor?s browser (credit card numbers, Social Security Numbers, etc.).

Red Eye Development will obtain an SSL certificate for your site if this encryption is needed or desired.
